The completion of the A30 improvement project in 2007 meant that Cornwall now has dual-carriageway access to the whole of the UK. Typical journey times from Truro to London are around 4½ hours, while the route from Bodmin to Birmingham is approximately 3½ hours. The road network enables Westfield Transport, Cornwall's largest road haulier, to carry over 100,000 tonnes of goods each year to destinations across Britain and Europe.
Ongoing local investment in improvements to road networks have ensured better journeys for commuters and swift travel times between Cornwall’s towns.
Rail links have also been strengthened, with two national mainline train operators, First Great Western and CrossCountry, providing high quality services across the UK. London Paddington is 4½ hours from Truro, and there are also popular overnight sleeper trains.
Newquay Cornwall Airport is one of the fastest growing regional airports in the UK. Flybe offers four flights every day to London Gatwick. It also provides frequent flights to other UK destinations. Lufthansa and bmibaby also operate from Newquay.
Last but not least, Cornwall’s ports remain an integral part of the area’s economy. Falmouth is reputed to be the third largest natural harbour in the world and its deepwater facilities have ensured it continues to serve passenger and freight traffic. It has the UK’s largest offshore bunkering facility, providing all grades of marine fuels and has benefited from a £35m investment programme over the last five years, updating facilities for cargo handling and access.
