Environmental and Renewable Energy in Cornwall

While some places talk about a green economy as the future, in Cornwall it’s already happening. The region is established as a leader not only in renewable energy but also in developing and nurturing environmental technologies that are transforming approaches to sustainability across the world.

In 1991, Cornwall was the first location in the UK to open a commercial wind farm. It is at the forefront of solar energy generation, taking advantage of its situation as the sunniest part of the country. With 1000 miles of coastline, much of it facing the Atlantic, it offers huge potential for wave power – which is why it is home to what will be the world’s most advanced test site for wave energy. And the region is harnessing our historical mining and geological skills – and natural resources – at the largest geothermal test site in the UK.

But Cornwall’s green economy goes beyond energy. We are home, of course, to the Eden Project – which is dedicated to ‘promoting the understanding and responsible management of the vital relationship between plants, people and resources leading to a sustainable future for all' – and benefit from its iconic status, attracting sustainable businesses, and its Green Talent programme which helps develop the workforce of the future. We are also home to pioneering companies in areas such as waste processing and marine renewable energy.

These businesses benefit from a shared regional commitment to protecting Cornwall’s natural environment. The South West is the UK’s first region to be designated a Low Carbon Economic Area, and the Cornwall Council has adopted a sustainable energy strategy, which includes strict building regulations and plans to invest in renewable energy and green transport.

At the heart of these plans is the fact that Cornwall will be home to one of just four eco-towns in the UK. This will mean more than 5,000 new homes – meeting the highest environmental standards – being constructed as part of a zero carbon development to create a unique place to work and live. Plans are still in development, but it will offer unprecedented opportunities for emerging technology companies specialising in transport, renewable energy and construction materials / techniques.
