ICT and creative businesses in Cornwall

ICT and creative businesses in Cornwall

Cornwall has become established as a hub for the knowledge economy with a number of innovative ICT companies thriving here and a fast-growing creative sector taking advantage of the area’s broadband connectivity.

One of the most tangible benefits of EU funding in Cornwall has been the development of an advanced telecommunications network that puts Cornish businesses in easy contact with customers and partners across the globe. This has proved invaluable to all sectors, but has also stimulated the growth of a local ICT industry, punching far above its weight.

As well as a number of systems integrators and consultancies that offer an invaluable service to organisations operating across the South West, Cornwall has now become a popular location for ICT companies looking to move their operations. In 2005 Infoteam, the main technical repair and remanufacturing centre for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, relocated from West London to St Columb Major – just five minutes from Newquay Cornwall Airport – taking advantage of Cornish rents and, of course, skills.

The Digital Peninsula Network – a local initiative – helps companies make the most of these technology skills, providing an ideal opportunity to meet potential partners and share knowledge. The Network Centre in Penzance offers not only a meeting hub but also state-of-the-art equipment for R&D and to support cross-platform testing and joint workgroup sessions.

Businesses in the sector will receive a further boost with the development of the Next Generation Broadband network from 2011 – as will the region’s many creative businesses, in sectors from graphic design to multimedia production, gaming and online services.

Many of these are small companies with global clients and significant growth potential, attracting high-calibre staff with the promise of the Cornish lifestyle, flexible working patterns and a creative environment. In particular, Cornish companies can draw on some of the best young talent in the UK, coming from University College Falmouth's internationally renowned design and media programmes.
