On 11 March, over a period of 48 hours, teams from more than 50 cities will be working in friendly competition to design and upload the prototype of a service, based on a shared theme which will be revealed at the start of the event. The Global Service Jam will bring together people interested in designing better services and exploring different ways to generate ideas.
Cornwall will be the only location across the globe facilitating both a physical and virtual team. The physical team, led by Falmouth-based Sea Communications, will be based at Pool Innovation Centre, which benefits from fibre to the premises, providing bandwidth speeds of up to 100MB. This team will be able to take advantage of advanced video conferencing and digital white board technology to aid its management of other participants located across the county.
Robert Woolf, MD of Sea Communications explains: “The Global Service Jam aims to kick start a more user-centered approach to design. The theme could be anything from managing issues around climate change, unemployment or deprivation to affordable housing and public transport. Whatever it is, the solutions have the potential to impact on both a local as well as international level if implemented.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge. Designers would usually have several weeks to work up concepts and undertake research and development, but we believe by bringing together people with different skills sets we could produce something really exciting. It’s going to be great to see what each team comes up with.”
Cornwall is home to a fast-growing innovative and imaginative design sector. The county’s design businesses are set to benefit further from the roll out of superfast broadband across the county which will make Cornwall the best connected rural region in the EU by 2014.
